Doug Casey Uncovers the Real Price of Peak Oil

Doug Casey, chairman of Casey Research and expert on crisis investing, is on the search for real wealth ? not investments in companies that push around paper. In this exclusive interview with The Energy Report, Casey shares his pragmatic take on what's next for oil, gas, and nuclear power.

The Energy Report: There will be a Casey Research Summit on Navigating the Politicized Economy in Carlsbad, California, in September. At the last conference, Porter Stansberry caused some excitement with his argument that oil could go to $40/barrel (bbl). What's your view?

Doug Casey: We like to have a range of defensible views represented at our conferences. But personally, I don't think it's realistic to suggest oil prices will drop as low as $40/bbl.

I am of the opinion that the Hubbert peak-oil theory is correct. In the 1950s, M. King Hubbert projected that US oil production would start declining in the 1970s, and he was accurate. Then he projected that in the mid-2000s, the world's production of light, sweet crude would start declining. He was quite correct about that, too.

There will always be plenty of oil at some given price, but to produce oil ? even conventional, shallow, light sweet crude ? now costs close to $40/bbl in many places.

It's extremely expensive to produce oil through unconventional techniques like horizontal drilling and fracking. Producing oil from tar sands is very expensive and problematical.

Drilling 15,000 feet under the ocean is very expensive and has a lot of risk.

Drilling in politically unstable jurisdictions with sparse infrastructure is neither cheap nor fun. We're talking about production costs of at least $80/bbl in many cases.

I don't think oil is going down much from here.

Let's not, in addition, forget that it's the most political commodity in the world, and that most of it still comes from the Middle East, where tensions will remain high.

I'm neutral to bullish on oil. I'm not bearish at all.

TER: How will US natural gas impact oil prices?

DC: The thing with natural gas is that it's almost an entirely local market. Oil is very transportable, very fungible ? it's a world market. Oil prices are relatively consistent ? say within 20-30% worldwide. But the price of gas differs by hundreds of percent around the globe because it's not very transportable. It doesn't seem that's going to change in the near future.

The price of gas is going to stay low in the US for some time because of new technologies, namely horizontal drilling and fracking, which allow the exploitation of vast new deposits. These deposits can produce large amounts of hydrocarbons, albeit at relatively high cost. As soon as prices start to rise, however, wells that have been shut because of low prices will start producing again ? and that will keep a lid on gas prices for some time to come.

TER: Do you see potential for the US to become a natural-gas exporter at some point in the future?

DC: The problem with gas is that, unlike oil, it's hard to move and inconvenient to export. There are basically two ways that you can move gas. One is via pipelines. That doesn't work very well across oceans. The second is by liquefying it and putting it in liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers and then transporting it to some place where it is re-gasified again, but that is expensive and it's actually quite dangerous because the LNG tankers are almost like floating bombs.

I'm not convinced that gas is ever going to become a truly international commodity ? at least not until it's much more expensive.

The idea of the US becoming a huge gas exporter is a politically driven fantasy. The government throws ideas out if it makes them look good. We bat them back when we weigh up the realities, then it's up to the reader to decide. It's why I think our summits and the world-shaping topics we discuss are so important.

TER: Can we assume that you're not as bullish on gas as you are on oil?

DC: Yes. I'm much more bullish on oil. Oil is a much more concentrated energy than gas. Oil is needed for cars. It's needed for airplanes. It's needed for everything. Gas is mostly used for utilities and heating. Oil is both a much denser energy and a much more important form of energy.

TER: Speaking of concentrated types of energies, you have called nuclear "the safest, cheapest, and cleanest form of mass power generation," yet we still haven't seen the uranium price return. What's your view on the future of uranium?

DC: I have to be bullish simply because of reality. It really is the safest, cheapest, and cleanest form of mass power, but unfortunately it's also the object of mass political hysteria. Many misinformed but well-funded nongovernmental organizations simply hate uranium, for purely ideological reasons.

Actually, thorium would be an even better form of nuclear power than uranium. We've been using uranium primarily because you can't make nuclear bombs out of thorium, and the US was building up its nuclear arsenal from World War II on. This is how uranium came to be used for nuclear power plants instead of thorium, but that's a whole different discussion.

Of course, now the disaster at Fukushima is held up as proof that nuclear isn't viable; the Japanese and German governments are panicking and shutting down their nuclear plants as quickly as they can. But doing so is extremely foolish.

To start, Fukushima used 50-year-old technology. That plant was ? like most plants in the world today ? an antique, two generations behind current designs. It was also poorly located. It should never have been put right on the ocean. Other design mistakes were made. Still, even over the next decade, only a few people will die from radiation released, whereas at least 20,000 died from the earthquake and tsunami.

But the real question is: if nuclear is not going to be used for mass power generation, where is the power going to come from?

Most of the world's power is generated by coal, but coal is extremely dirty and dangerous in every way possible ? in the production process, and in the residues that it leaves both on the land and in the air.

In an industrial world with seven billion people, the only energy source that makes sense is nuclear power. Sure, you can use wind and solar from time to time and in certain places. But those technologies are extremely expensive, and they absolutely can't solve the world's energy problems. Certainly not when electrical grids start going down, as they did in India last month. That's why India and China will be building scores of nuclear plants in the years to come.

I watched Clint Eastwood struggle at the Republican national convention on Thursday night. I died a thousand deaths for the film legend as he stumbled over words and searched in vain to remember the jokes and applause lines he surely imagined delivering with graceful timing and easy charm. It wasn?t a complete failure, but it was damn near close, and I know why: He thought he could wing it.

I used to be an actor. I?ve been on hundreds of auditions and performed in front of large crowds. I learned the hard way that when speaking to an audience there is no substitute for preparation. Clint?s an actor, of course, and a far better one than I could ever be, but he made a real rookie mistake in thinking he could wing it.

Some people think they?re naturally charming. They think they can stand in front of a crowd and riff for a while and it will seem casual, unhurried, and intellectually coherent. ?I know what I?m going to say,? they?ll tell you ahead of time if you ask about the presentation they are giving to the board of directors or the little talk they have offered to give to the church picnic. That?s a killer. For as sure as rain makes applesauce if you haven?t prepared?if you haven?t rehearsed exactly what you?re going to say?you will step? onto that stage, or up to that podium, or in front of that church picnic, and your mouth will dry up. I?ve served as the best man at two weddings. As everyone knows, the best man has two jobs: hold onto the ring and give the toast at the reception. In both cases, I was able to successfully hang onto the ring, but the toast was a total flop. Why? Because I didn?t practice. I didn?t write anything down. I didn?t, in truth, do much of anything to prepare. I just thought I knew what I was going to say. I thought lightning would strike.

I also delivered the eulogy at my mother?s funeral. Unlike the wedding toasts, this worked out well. I wrote it out. I edited it. I practiced. Knowing that I would be under intense emotional pressure, I resolved to focus all of my attention on reading the words I had written. No dramatic pauses. No attempts at eye contact. No laugh lines or rhetorical flourishes. I would just read the words.

And it worked. It worked because there is no substitution for preparing for an appearance before a crowd. You simply cannot take to a stage in front of a gathering of strangers, no matter how small or large that gathering may be, and expect to get lucky. You will lose. You will lose every time.

Funnily enough, Clint Eastwood?s awkward and prime-time consuming performance meant that Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney, who took the stage after him, had less wiggle room in a tightly scripted program than they were expecting. Rubio was especially squeezed, as he was undoubtedly told that he needed to leave enough time for the bulk of Romney?s speech to be delivered during the 10-11 p.m. hour on the east coast. I have no doubt that some producer or stage manager told the Florida senator right before he stepped on stage, ?You?ve got 7 minutes less than you thought you had. Don?t go long. Don?t? step on the governor?s time. We?ll cut you off. Don?t. Go. Long. ?

Rubio ended up giving the speech of his life, in large part because he had no time to think, or to emote, or?truly?to act. Every speech is made better by having to deliver it in less time than you think it needs. So many of these politicians think they?re God?s oratorical gift to man. They think they?ve got it. They think they have the natural charm to take an audience on an unforgettable emotional ride. Rubio may in fact have that natural charm, I don?t know, but last night he obeyed Hamlet?s timeless command to all public speakers everywhere to ?speak the speech trippingly on the tongue.? He just said the words. And the words did his job for him.

People are now talking seriously about Rubio as a future president. He can thank Clint Eastwood for forcing him to pick up the pace. And we can all thank the film legend for reminding us that there is no substitute for preparation.

Twin typhoons raise fears in disaster-prone NKorea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Twin typhoons are renewing fears of a humanitarian crisis in North Korea, where poor drainage, widespread deforestation and crumbling infrastructure can turn even a routine rainstorm into a catastrophic flood.

Typhoon Bolaven struck the North on Tuesday and Wednesday, submerging houses and roads, ruining thousands of acres of crops and triggering landslides that buried train tracks ? scenes that are all too familiar in this disaster-prone nation. A second major storm, Typhoon Tembin, is forecast to dump more rain on the Korean Peninsula on Thursday and Friday.

The storms come as North Korea is still recovering from earlier floods that killed more than 170 people and destroyed thousands of homes. That in turn followed a springtime drought that was the worst in a century in some areas.

Foreign aid groups contacted Thursday said they are standing by in Pyongyang, but had not received requests for help from the North Korean government. They had little information on the extent of damage and were relying on reports from state media. The country's wariness toward the outside world, as well as a primitive rural road system, means aid may be slow arriving, if it is allowed to come at all.

"These fresh storms, coming just a few weeks after the serious flooding ? they do raise concerns because we see parts of the countryside battered again that have already been left in a vulnerable state," said Francis Markus, spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in East Asia.

Heavy rains that could be little more than an inconvenience elsewhere can be calamitous in North Korea.

Downpours trigger landslides that barrel down the country's deforested mountains and valleys. For decades, rural people have felled trees because they have no other source of fuel or warmth, leaving the landscape barren and heavily eroded. Rivers overflow, submerging crops, inundating roads and engulfing hamlets.

Since June, tens of thousands have been left without clean water, electricity and access to food and other supplies. That leads to a risk of water-borne and respiratory diseases and malnutrition, aid workers say.

Because the North annually struggles to produce enough food from its rocky, mountainous landscape to feed its 24 million people, a poorly timed natural disaster can easily tip the country into crisis, like the famine in the 1990s that followed a similar succession of devastating storms.

A North Korean land management official acknowledged in an interview with The Associated Press that widespread deforestation and a lack of basic infrastructure have made the country vulnerable to the typhoons and storms that batter the peninsula each year.

"It's important for the future of our children to make our country rich and beautiful," Ri Song Il, director of external affairs for the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection, said in June.

He said a campaign is under way to replenish forests, build highways and construct proper irrigation at the order of North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un. He held up a green pamphlet on land management that was the first official document Kim published after taking power from his father.

But it may be too little, too late, for this year's summer rains.

In Pyongyang, North Korea's showcase capital of grand monuments and broad boulevards, the rains have been little more than a nuisance for residents tromping about in rubber boots and umbrellas.

Outside the capital, it's a different story.

In villages without the luxury of paved roads, summer downpours have sliced through roadways and washed away bridges, all but cutting off already isolated communities from supplies, food and help.

Two weeks ago, AP journalists visited a flood-ravaged mining hamlet in South Phyongan province where gushing waters from an earlier storm swallowed a whole block of homes. The trip, a mere 40-mile (60-kilometer) drive northeast of Pyongyang, required a bumpy four-hour ride along rutted, muddy roads.

Along the way, workers piled stones along the roadside as a bulwark against landslides, but they were no match for the water rushing down mountainsides.

Villagers crouched in makeshift lean-tos and camped on the rubble where their houses once stood. They vowed to rebuild once the roads are restored and trucks can cart in cement. But there are concerns about how vulnerable their new homes would be if they rebuild at the foot of a mountain in the county of Songchon, which means "place where many waters come together."

North Korea has no clear long-term strategy to deal with disasters or climate change, the United Nations said in a report issued in June.

This year, North Korea is at a particularly dangerous juncture, said the Red Cross' Markus. Over the last two years, he said, "we've been seeing a gradual deterioration in the humanitarian situation."

The Red Cross works with villagers to prepare evacuation plans and other ways to protect themselves, their homes and their farmland in the event of a disaster, he said.

But severe weather remains an omnipresent threat, and poor infrastructure and massive deforestation are "a major factor in exacerbating these weather events," he said. "There's no doubt that the vulnerabilities in the countryside are considerable."

Obama does first presidential 'ask me anything' chat on Reddit

President Obama and his staff are quite savvy when it comes to technology ? and social sites, in particular???so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that they turned to the social sharing site Reddit today. But it did. With little advance notice, Obama held an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) live chat, taking questions directly from the Reddit community.

Obama said the most difficult decision he made during his presidency was to boost U.S. military forces for a "surge" in Afghanistan. He said it might take a constitutional amendment to reform the country's campaign financing system. He laid out his plan for helping small businesses and debt-laden graduates, gave a shout-out to Internet freedom and basketball great Michael Jordan, and voiced support for the idea of sending astronauts to Mars someday. But perhaps the biggest news from the AMA was that Obama was actually doing an AMA.

"I am Barack Obama, President of the United States ? AMA," he posted on Reddit, adopting the site's terminology. Several Reddit moderators and Admins quickly chimed in to confirm that they verified Obama's identity and that the post wasn't some sort of prank. Reddit's general manager, Erik Martin, told us that the site's staff was in contact with Obama's staff. Obama additionally posted a link to a tweet from his official Twitter account, pointing to that Reddit thread, along with a photo showing the president sitting at a laptop.

A Reddit AMA is basically a question-and-answer free-for-all ? a staple of the Internet forum. Astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an AMA alum, famously described Reddit as a "raging community of people with boundless curiosity." From its humble beginnings, in which ordinary joes took questions about their extraordinary experiences, the Reddit AMA has grown into a global stage for scholars, authors and celebrities.

Obama's first-ever presidential AMA added even more wattage to Reddit's spotlight.

"Hey everybody ??this is Barack," the president wrote at the start of his AMA. "Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover."

Obama was due to answer questions on Reddit for about half an hour. More than 11,000 comments piled up by the time Obama bowed out of the conversation, almost an hour after it began. Traffic levels were so high that some folks who wanted to get in on the AMA were stymied by the server overload.?During the AMA, the two top trends on Twitter were "RNC" (for the Republican National Convention) ... and "Reddit."

We checked in with Reddit's Martin while the AMA was in progress. When we asked how things were going, he blurted out that "it's a bit crazy over here!" Frantic typing could be heard in the background.

After the AMA, Reddit's status account on Twitter reported that the site was "cleaning up after the president's visit. ... We'll be back ASAP."

Here's a rundown of the topics Obama covered. Some of the questions have been condensed or paraphrased:

Are you considering increasing funds to the space program? "Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the Curiosity probe on Mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting-edge research that can take us to the next level ??so even as we continue work with the International Space Station, we are focused on a potential mission to an asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Is Internet freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform??"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the Internet remains the open forum for everybody ??from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although their will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle ??and it will be reflected in the platform."

Favorite basketball player? "[Michael] Jordan ??I'm a Bulls guy."

How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? And what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014? "We've really focused on this since I came into office ? 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA [Small Business Administration]. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage."

What is the first thing you'll do on Nov. 7, win or lose??"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard ? especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term? "The decision to surge our forces in Afghanistan. Anytime you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the Taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to Afghan lead ??so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term??"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds-barred flow of seven- and eight-figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and [has] been sponsored in Congress ? to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

What's the recipe for the White House's beer? "It will be out soon! I can tell from firsthand experience, it is tasty."

I am a recent law school graduate [and now] find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future.?... Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. ... What hope can you offer us for your second term??"I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right ? your long-term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're 26. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle-class jobs ? and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth ? more tax cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on Wall Street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didn't work, and will make the economy worse. Ohio Democratic officials fired for attempt to extend early voting

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Two Democratic officials in Ohio, a key battleground state and huge electoral prize in the November 6 presidential election, were fired for trying to extend early voting to weekends in defiance of a state ban, officials said on Tuesday.

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican, issued a directive earlier this month that the hours for early in-person voting should be consistent throughout the state, where voting rules are a hot-button issue.

Voters will be able to cast absentee ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for the first three weeks of early voting beginning October 2 and until 7 p.m. on weekdays for the final two weeks before the election.

But two Democrats on the Montgomery County elections board, an area which includes Democratic-leaning Dayton, voted to allow weekend voting after Husted's directive was issued. Their votes were balanced by two Republican board members who opposed the change and the idea did not progress toward implementation.

After reviewing a report from an August 20 hearing on the case, Husted decided to fire the Democrats.

"You knowingly and willingly violated Ohio election law," said Husted in an e-mail Tuesday to election officials Dennis Lieberman and Thomas Ritchie. The message was provided to Reuters by the Secretary of State's office.

Democrats had argued that Husted's directive making absentee balloting consistent did not specifically prohibit additional weekend hours. They plan to appeal the decision.

Democrats said Husted has been trying to restrict voting in Democratic-leaning counties. Prior to his directive, some Democratic-leaning counties were not permitted extra hours while some Republican-leaning counties were. Extended voting is thought to favor Democrats in Ohio.

Husted said he was committed to making voting "uniform, easy, fair and secure."

Also in Ohio, lawyers for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign have asked a federal judge to restore early voting rights for the final days before the election to all registered voters in the state. A ruling is pending.

With the stakes so high in Obama's re-election bid against Republican Mitt Romney, there have been a number of disputes this year over voting, especially over new laws in several states requiring voters to present a valid photo ID.

Democrats say large number of minorities and elderly voters do not have the necessary ID. Republicans say the photo ID rule is needed to prevent voting fraud.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Rivier University has a position available for a full time Educational Resource Center/Reference Librarian. The Cho Educational Resource Center (ERC) is a curriculum support library designed to serve the research needs of the University?s education students. The ERC is located in the Benoit Education Center, a facility separate from the main (Regina) Library. The ERC is fully part of the University?s Library system and the Library?s User Services Department.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee all services and daily functions of the ERC such as circulation, reserves, shelving and the like. Assist in developing and administering an operating budget for the ERC. Plan hours of operation for the ERC. Provide reference service to students, faculty, staff, and other ERC and library patrons using the full range of technology aids such as e-mail, chat, texting as well as traditional modes of interaction. Provide classroom library instruction, create and edit LibGuides and participate in the library?s Information Literacy Program. Collect and compile library statistics pertaining to the ERC. Prepare related administrative/ operations reports. In a team setting, edit and revise the ERC and Library web page. Serve as library liaison and collection development specialist for Education faculty and other subject areas as assigned. Assist with selecting database and reference resources. Learn and implement new resources and technologies as they relate to reference and instruction services. Assist with promoting library services, resources and events. Assist in the coordination and development of materials for library events. Keep abreast of current developments and trends in the field, particularly in technology. Attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS degree. An MLS degree candidate (near completion) may be considered if applicant has sufficient relevant experience. The ability and willingness to support the mission of the University, in all daily activities. Experience working in a library, academic library experience preferred. Skills related to reference and circulation services, including database searching, and experience conducting reference interviews. Some web page editing and design experience, as well as library instruction experience. Strong planning, supervisory and writing skills. Ability to show initiative, prioritize, and complete projects in a timely manner. Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred: Advanced web editing skills. Experience with creating and editing LibGuides and online tutorials. Experience working with curriculum-based materials and/or an Education background. Experience providing library instruction in accord with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Some experience with collection development, writing reports, and developing/administering a budget.

Final Fridays Second Anniversary!

Two years down the road, Final Fridays has become Lawrence?s preeminent art event each month, bringing thousands of visitors to the downtown area in search of outstanding visual art, musical entertainment, literary arts and performance. Final Fridays began as the collaborative effort of artists, galleries, curators, downtown businesses, The Lawrence Arts Center, Downtown Lawrence Incorporated and many many more tireless volunteers who wished only to bring the wealth of the Lawrence arts community to the public. This massive effort is rewarded today with a renewed boom in the arts in Lawrence, visible everywhere you look.

On this Final Friday, you will find work, music and performances by hundreds of artists all over the downtown area as well as the new Warehouse Arts District. Maps can be found the evening of Final Friday at The Lawrence Arts Center, the Warehouse Arts District and many local galleries and venues. Events are free and open to the public from 5 until 9 pm, so pick up a map and start walking!

These incredible photographs do not depict the ancient palaces, mosques, and ruins of guidebooks; this is the everyday Turkey of a rising middle class, heavily influenced by Western Europe and the United States. This is also the Turkey of displaced migrants, shantytowns, and gentrification.

Artist?s Statement: This work celebrates the disruption, however small, of the expected. There is a certain symmetry, a prevailing banality and stillness, only occasionally interrupted by some half noticeable absurdity. One could argue that this is a parallel to our routine lives, primarily spent in some automatic mode of everyday activity, begging for the details that separate one day or hour from the next so as to make it stand out, make it special. You could even argue that desire for ?specialness? leads individuals that are otherwise functioning as part of the societal hive to act out, to call attention?to get that crazy haircut or shiny car that disrupts a sea of gray sedans.

There is the tension of what appears ?normal? but is in fact slightly adjacent to normal. The colors, the method and application of paint, the shiny resin surface: all are employed to take away from any indication of ?reality.? Certain details are off, skewed, indicative of an interference, disorder, or imperfect pattern. This world is the world you and I know, but it also is not. It is a made up world, comprised of bits and pieces of the familiar and the familiar desire to be something else, something more than that, something different. Special.

Objects in varying states of deconstruction litter her workshop surfaces. A central piece will often inspire a mental picture that, in turn, must find its way to reality through trial and error assimilations. Each finished piece of art or jewelry gives validity to one woman?s slightly bizarre obsession with all things metal.

Sculpture artist Jacob Burmood will present a selection of works in a new exhibition, Moving at the Speed of Time, opening at the Teller?s art space on August 28.

Moving at the Speed of Time is the first Lawrence showing for Burmood, who moved to the area for graduate school after spending four years as a professional artist in Missouri, where he completed his undergraduate studies in sculpture. The exhibition features several of Burmood?s sculptures ? both as hanging ?wall pieces? and as free-standing structures ? in addition to some of his ceramic vases.

Though Burmood created all the works presented in Moving at the Speed of Time during the past two years, he says they?ve been in development as part of a larger body of work for the past eight years. He says his work draws influence from the smooth motion typical of rivers, tides and dance.

?There?s definitely a theme that runs through the entire body of everything I?ve ever done, and that?s an appeal to the sense of movement and kinetics without actually moving,? Burmood says. ?It?s pretty much geared towards fluid movements, trying to approach some kind of grace.?

Duet Designs jewelry reflects over 25 years of combined design experience by husband and wife team, Gary and Sherrie. Gary creates fused dichroic glass pendants, pins and earrings. Dichroic glass (originally produced for the aerospace industry) has a beautiful and unique reflective quality with exciting shifts of color, depending on the light and the angle at which the piece is viewed. Gary assembles an artistic selection of multiple layers of dichroic, iridescent and clear glass, then fuses them together at a temperature of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sherrie selects semi-precious gem stones from around the world and whimsically wire-wraps them into pendants and earrings. She is also an accomplished artist in the mediums of polymer clay and fine silver, and often incorporates Gary?s dichroic glass cabochons into her pieces. Each hand-crafted Duet Designs item is an original, one-of-a-kind piece of fine quality jewelry.

Cindy Buehler of Cinderelish began working with clay 12 years ago. She has taken classes and workshops at Red Star Studios, The KC Clay Guild, William Jewell College and Bracker?s in Lawrence. Cindy uses bright glaze colors to enhance her bold black and white sgrafitto designs. Her work is created from porcelain clay on the pottery wheel or with her original slab molds. Although some designs are similar, each piece is one of a kind. Cindy currently teaches classes and works from her home studio in Liberty, MO.

Michael Paull is a very talented composer/multi-instrumentalist who teaches music lessons at the Americana Music Academy here in Lawrence. Originally from Colorado, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas a number of years ago to pursue some musical opportunities. Michael?s music has been heard on television and radio. His music has been performed in a variety of settings, including a premiere by the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. He continues to teach, compose, and perform music throughout the area, both solo and ensemble. Kansas has become his permanent home.

The Watkins celebrates the dramatic move of its Milburn Electric Car with a family-friendly party on Friday, August 31 from 6-8 PM.

When the Milburn car was moved from its second floor home of 37 years, it couldn?t just be rolled up the Watkins grand staircase. It received a custom-made rig to take it back out the front door, around the corner of 11^th and Massachusetts and up into the air via crane before sliding carefully through a third floor window to its new spot.

To celebrate the Milburn?s move, the Watkins will stage Lawrence?s Longest Toy Car Racetrack on August 31, as part of the monthly Final Friday. Visitors are invited to bring their own Matchbox-style cars to race down the track set up on Watkins grand staircase. Photos of the Milburn?s journey will be on display, and museum staff and volunteers will be present to talk about the car?s history: its origins, its home at the museum and its most recent adventure.

It?s shaping up to be a good time. J Roger Spohn?s photography exhibit is still up in the staircase, and the impressive Ernst Ulmer painting ?Blood-Stained Dawn? is on display in the new Quantrill?s Raid exhibit.

Lawrence painter Aaron Marable has kept relatively quiet in recent years. After the birth of his first child a year and a half ago, his creative output slowed with the demands of parenthood. But he?s back at it with a new exhibition, Domestic Bliss, opening at The Invisible Hand Gallery on August 31.

The near-dozen paintings that make up the exhibition find Marable trying out some new things. He says he?s focusing more on color relationships than in his previous work, aiming for a subtle, refined palette. But Domestic Bliss also has him challenging his motives as a figurative painter.

?It?s less figurative and more about form and more poetic moments,? Marable says. ?I?m trying to step away a little bit from the fussiness of what being a figurative painter can mean.?

With his move from strict figurative work, Marable strives to address several points in one piece. Though one would expect an exhibition titled Domestic Bliss to function as a portrait of familial happiness, Marables paintings contain subtle elements of darkness that reveal the complicated nature of parenthood.

?There?s always something slightly unsettling in the work, which is part in parcel with domesticity,? Marable says. ?There?s the elation and joy of the day to day and watching this person develop. That bond is created in the most intense way, in a way that you?ve never known before. But then there?s also the other side of it. There?s frustration and there?s self-doubt. There are all these things that are still a part of it that doesn?t always get addressed by parents.?
