Omidyar Network, Founded By eBay Billionaire, Creates ...

On the day Pierre Omidyar became a billionaire, he knew he wanted to put his money to good use.

In September 1998, the eBay founder watched his stake in the company rise to over $1 billion on the first day of public trading. Having written the original software for the site only three years prior, Omidyar didn't feel an overwhelming sense of entitlement to the wealth and made it his mission to make sure the money was employed effectively, he wrote in the Harvard Business Review. To do so, he created the Omidyar Network (ON), an organization that invests in promising social enterprises, some of which serve the world's poorest populations.

After initially starting a nonprofit family foundation, Omidyar decided to create a new organization that would use the power of business to address global poverty, he wrote. Omidyar had watched eBay became a powerful influence in online commerce -- empowering many people to become entrepreneurs -- and wanted to help other underserved populations in a similar way.

"The vast majority of entrepreneurs who set up shop [because of eBay] were people who might not have been entrepreneurs in other capacities," said Paula Goldman, Omidyar Network director. "There were a large number of single moms who couldn't afford to work out of the house, people with developmental disabilities, and a large number of disabled military veterans who were able to set up shop working from home."

The site's effect on underserved populations inspired the creation of the Omidyar Network, which uses impact investments to facilitate efforts around the globe to assist those at the base of the economic pyramid. A report by JP Morgan, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Global Impact Investing Network describes impact investments as "investments intended to create positive impact alongside financial return." According to the report, the impact investing market offers the potential for invested capital of between $400 billion and $1 trillion over the next 10 years.

To date, the Omidyar Network has made over $550 million in impact investments. Roughly half of those investments were grants, while the other half consisted of for-profit tools like loans or equity, according to Goldman. All of the money went to early-stage entrepreneurs who were perceived as too risky by commercial investors or because "investors might not be willing to come in until the concept is more proven," Goldman said.

As a hybrid for-profit/nonprofit organization, the Omidyar Network effectively "operates with two checkbooks," Goldman said. The blend of nonprofit and for-profit enables the company to invest in social entrepreneurs in whichever way will be most effective.

One of the companies that has received funding from the Omidyar Network is d.light. As a for-profit social enterprise that produces affordable solar lanterns, d.light aims to bring light to 100 million people by 2020 who currently do not have access to reliable electricity.

Omidyar Network also works with companies that seek to create greater governmental transparency. Janaagraha, a nonprofit based in India, created the website IPaidABribe.com to bring attention to widespread corruption. Because of the site, the local government in Bangalore stepped in and cleaned up two departments, Goldman said. The service has already expanded to Kenya, Greece, Zimbabwe and Pakistan and has been requested in many more nations, she added.

Goldman said the example set by Pierre Omidyar and the Omidyar Network can help move the impact investing industry forward. Investors need to keep two main things in mind when considering potential investments, she said. "Investors need to make a commitment to provide early-stage risk capital to kick-start new sectors," she said. "And they need to truly commit to knowing the local markets so they can pick out the next d.light or Janaagraha."

The Facebook Demetricator Removes the Numbers from Facebook, Leaves You No Excuse for Not Working

The Facebook Demetricator Removes the Numbers from Facebook, Leaves You No Excuse for Not WorkingThe Facebook Demetricator Removes the Numbers from Facebook, Leaves You No Excuse for Not Working Chrome/Firefox: Part useful tool and part social experiment, Ben Grosser's Facebook Demetricator removes all of the numbers that keep our eyes glued to Facebook?likes, new messages, comments, notifications, all of them are gone. With them removed, you can scan the site for the information you want, read without worrying about killing too much time interacting, and get back to work.

Facebook is distracting enough, but the little hooks that are designed to keep us there all do their part to pull in our attention. The Facebook Demetricator erases those numbers as though they were never even there. Ben describes the extension this way:

Facebook Demetricator is a web browser addon that hides these metrics. No longer is the focus on how many friends you have or on how much they like your status, but on who they are and what they said. Friend counts disappear. '16 people like this' becomes ?people like this'. Through changes like these, Demetricator invites Facebook's users to try the system without the numbers, to see how their experience is changed by their absence. With this work I aim to disrupt the prescribed sociality these metrics produce, enabling a network society that isn't dependent on quantification.

Of course, if you already have AdBlock Plus installed, the AntiSocial plugin can do much of this for you too, and we've shown you how to use SocialFixer to improve your Facebook experience as well. Either way, if the idea piques your interest, or you think it'll make you more productive on or off Facebook, it's available for Chrome and Firefox at the link below.

Warren on her race against Brown and 2016?

Spinners and Winners

The marquee Senate race this year is in Massachusetts, where Democrat Elizabeth Warren is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

"I never thought I'd run for public office, but I feel the urgency of this moment," says Warren. "If we don't make some important changes and make them soon, this country is going to change fundamentally, and it's not for the better."

Democrats took notice of the former Harvard professor late last year, when a?video of Warren speaking on fair taxation and debt surfaced online.

"There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody," Warren says in the video. "You built a factory out there, good for you, but I want to be clear, you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you all were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for."

Warren's popularity among Democrats has only increased since then; there are already people talking, tweeting, and posting about Elizabeth Warren running for president in 2016.

"I have 5 words for that: No, no, no, no, no," says Warren, with a laugh. Though the woman who established the Consumer Protection Bureau is keen to get back to Washington, and says she is willing to work across the aisle and even with a -- unlikely, she says -- Romney administration.

"I want to go to Washington to fight for working families," says Warren "And that is true regardless of who is president and regardless of who else is in the United States Senate."

For more on Elizabeth Warren, including the candidate's views on the Supreme Court and which Republican senators she sees herself working with, check out today's Spinners and Winners. And head to yesterday's episode for our interview with incumbent GOP Sen. Scott Brown.

Student Debt Debacles

Most federal student loans have rates of 6.8 percent (or less) and offer broad consumer protections that allow people who lose their jobs to make lower, affordable payments or to defer payment until they recover financially.

Private student loans ? from banks and other private institutions ? typically come with variable interest rates and fewer consumer protections, which means that borrowers who get into trouble have few options other than default. Many borrowers did not learn about the differences between private and federal loans until after they became deeply indebted. And because of confusion about variable rates, they are sometimes shocked to learn what they owe when that first bill arrives.

The secrets of Buffett's success: Beating the Market with Beta

I?d like to call everyone?s attention to an Economist article entitled ?The secrets of Buffett?s success: Beating the Market with Beta?.? Basically, this article is an executive summary of two academic working papers; 1)?Betting against beta, by A Frazzini and LH Pedersen, and?2) Buffett?s Alpha, by A Frazzini, D Kabiller, and LH Pedersen.

In a nutshell, the Economist article explains that two factors: 1) the low-beta nature of Warren Buffett?s portfolio, and 2) Buffett?s leveraging of his portfolio by a factor of 60% using low cost AAA-rated debt and debt-like financing from his insurance and reinsurance operations, pretty much explain all off Warren Buffett?s superior returns over the course of the last 35 years (tip of the hat to Dr. JT Rose and Dr.?Don Cunningham for bringing the Economist article to my attention).

Introducing AppyMall: A New Educational App Marketplace

[prMac.com] San Francisco, California - AppyMall, a new marketplace for educational apps, has been launched by Technology in Education, a popular review site, to help teachers and parents find quality children's apps.

AppyMall allows users to search for educational apps by grade level and learning skill, such as math, language arts, or reading. AppyMall divides apps into anchor stores that organize book, game and educational apps into categories such as preschool, elementary school, middle school, speech and language, special needs and apps with lesson plans.

Within each anchor store, apps are sub-categorized by subject and price so that consumers can find relevant learning content quickly. There also is an option for the user to click on the app description to put it on a wish list, or to mark that they own it.

"The AppyMall educational categories are helpful for consumers to pinpoint different areas of educational content. Instead of browsing huge app stores under the blanket terms of 'education' or 'kids,' with AppyMall you can specifically target apps by subject area and grade level," said Lorraine Akemann of Moms With Apps. "This service should be helpful for parents and teachers alike in finding apps."

AppyMall is an offshoot of Technology in Education, a popular review site for educational apps with a Facebook community of more than 15,000.

The need for AppyMall, which categorizes apps by grade level and learning skill, became evident as the Technology in Education team witnessed the frustration of teachers looking for specific types of apps for their classroom, and parents seeking apps to foster learning at home. It also has become an important resource for apps that help special needs children, such as those on the Autism Spectrum.

"AppyMall is a fantastic resource for parents looking for special needs apps. There are so many apps on iTunes now that it is difficult to find apps that target a specific skill or deficit," said Kyle Tomson, president of the Mobile Education Store. "AppyMall not only narrows the search, but it only includes the best apps, ones that you can feel confident will help your child. I use it myself for my children."

The site also has become an important ally for educational app developers.

"Folks at AppyMall go beyond merely reviewing your app. They not only critique, but even suggest critical improvements," said Joy Deep Nath, co-founder of StudyPad. "But what really sets AppyMall apart is its focus on curriculum and the core education value of the app. This helps them create very fine-tuned, but extremely useful categories in education, like apps with lesson plans, apps for special education, etc. It's simply the best place for app discovery."

AppyMall was founded in 2012 to help parents and teachers cut through the clutter of the app marketplace to find quality educational apps for children.

Putin loyalists likely to win Russia local votes

KHIMKI, Russia (AP) ? President Vladimir Putin's loyalists appeared likely Sunday to retain their hold in thousands of local elections that offered slightly more room for competition, but were marred by opposition claims of widespread vote fraud.

The Kremlin eased stiff election laws in response to major protests against Putin's rule last winter, but introduced new restrictions after the demonstrations abated. Kremlin-approved governors and most of the incumbent mayors appeared poised to preserve their seats and the Kremlin's main United Russia party will likely keep dominating local legislatures and municipal councils.

In one of the most visible races Sunday, opposition activist Yevgeniya Chirikova was challenging the government-backed acting mayor of Khimki, a town just outside Moscow.

Chirikova, a 35-year-old mother of two who helped organize the anti-Putin protests in Moscow, filed two petitions ? alleging her rival broke campaign rules and that election officials manipulated voter lists. Authorities rejected her complaints, and it was unclear when a court could issue its verdict.

"If the elections were fair, then I'd have some kind of chance," Chirikova said Sunday. "But since the elections in this country are what they are, then my chances are different."

With 30 percent of precincts counted, Khimki acting Mayor Oleg Shakhov was winning the race with 47 percent of the vote, while Chirikova was trailing him with 20 percent. Full preliminary results are expected Monday.

Local authorities repeatedly denied Chirikova a public space to hold a rally; when she and Ksenia Sobchak, a glamorous TV host who became a face of Moscow protests, leafleted a tram this week, an obviously nervous conductor announced the vehicle was broken down and forced all passengers off, after which it drove away, apparently without any problem.

Chirikova's supporters allege that her Kremlin-backed rival is prepared to go to any lengths to prevent her winning, citing alleged ballot irregularities and even threats of violence to observers.

"I'm convinced they decided to do everything with pen and paper after the polls close," Nikolai Lyaskin, Chirikova's campaign manager, said. Observers reported seeing "carousel" voters being ferried on buses between polling stations to vote multiple times, a practice applied frequently in the fraud-tainted parliamentary elections in December that triggered anti-Putin protests.

With turnout low at 28 percent and antipathy towards Chirikova from pension-age voters high, few expected she had much chance of winning in the first place.

Chirikova won fame a few years ago by conducting a fiery campaign to save a local forest from being chopped down to build a highway. She lost that battle to powerful commercial interests, but has since become a prominent opposition figure.

Khimki resident Evgeny Orekhov said he voted for Chirikova "because she is part of the opposition" and "with representatives of the opposition, you want to see how the government will begin to act."

But another voter, Alexandra Zlotnikova, said she did not support Chirikova because she lacked executive experience. "I don't see her as a mayor. The girl is young, she only has thoughts about the forest, the forest, the forest."

Chirikova's campaign reflected challenges also faced by other opposition candidates in nearly 5,000 local elections held Sunday in 77 of Russia's 83 regions.

The opposition Just Russia and Yabloko parties, and Russia's only independent election monitoring group, Golos, pointed at activists' reports on "carousel" voting in many regions of Russia and said that authorities at some polling stations failed to allow observers to verify that ballot boxes were properly sealed. Monitors also witnessed evidence of ballot stuffing and were often denied permission to check voter lists.

Opposition politician Vladimir Ryzhkov said violations in Sunday's vote appeared to be even more blatant and widespread than in December's parliamentary elections.

In western Russia's Tula region, an observer from Yabloko had her finger broken in a scuffle with group of people who tried to stuff a ballot box.

"This kind of open impudence looks scary," Grigory Melkonyants, Golos deputy head, said of the vote violations registered by the group on Sunday.

Responding to protests that drew up to 100,000 people in Moscow, the Kremlin had restored direct elections of provincial governors, which had been abolished by Putin nearly eight years ago. But after Putin's inauguration for a third presidential term in May, he struck back at his foes with repressive bills, and the government put forward new requirements for the gubernatorial vote to retain control.

For instance, the Kremlin introduced "municipal filters," which obliged would-be gubernatorial candidates to get approval for their bid from 5-10 percent of members of local legislatures. With most local legislators heeding Kremlin orders, the requirement made it hard for many opposition candidates to enter races.

As a result, incumbents faced only token competition in gubernatorial races held Sunday in five provinces and were poised to win the vote, according to early returns.

The governor's race in the Ryazan region at one point seemed less sedate than others, with Gov. Oleg Kovalyov facing a rival backed by another pro-government party. But challenger Igor Morozov eventually threw his support behind the incumbent in exchange for a promised seat in the upper house of the federal parliament.

In some of the regions where opposition candidates managed to get registered, they were later barred from the race by courts for various technical reasons.

Earlier this year, the Kremlin also sought to quell public anger by simplifying registration rules for political parties. Sunday's ballot saw dozens of new parties, but only few of them were genuine opposition while most others were loyal to the government or were created as spoilers to steal votes from Kremlin critics.

The Kremlin's United Russia party was leading in the early count from far eastern regions where the vote ended, appearing to retain a majority of seats in the city council of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the regional legislature on the Sakhalin Island.

Observers still expected a few leading opposition parties to make headway in elections of city councils in big industrialized cities, where they have the strongest support.

The lack of real competition in many regions has contributed to public apathy, and voter turnout often was low. On the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, less than 15 percent of eligible voters turned out Sunday for a local city council election ? the lowest turnout in 15 years.

"Political reform has been conducted in the interests of the ruling party," Communist Party chief Gennady Zyuganov said after the vote ended. "People are reluctant to vote because they realize that."

(AP) ? This is more like it for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

The reigning MVP set a career high and tied a franchise record with six touchdown passes and the Packers played their best game of their so far inconsistent season, beating previously unbeaten Houston 42-24 on Sunday night.

Jordy Nelson caught three touchdown passes and James Jones had two, including a beautiful, diving one-hander in the fourth quarter for the Packers (3-3). Tight end Tom Crabtree had the other, a 48-yarder that Rodgers released just before taking a hit from Texans' outside linebacker Brooks Reed.

Rodgers completed 24 of 37 passes for 338 yards. He tied Matt Flynn's game record for TD passes, set in last year's regular-season finale against Detroit with Rodgers resting on the sideline in advance of the playoffs.

The Packers heard criticism from fans in Green Bay all week after blowing a 21-3 halftime lead to the Indianapolis Colts last week. Another loss would have dropped them to 2-4 for the first time since 2006, and they missed the playoffs that season.

Instead, they put themselves right back in the thick of their divisional race.

"This was an important game for us," Rodgers said. "We had a couple not go our way, games we should have won and 2-4 would have been very difficult."

Arian Foster scored two touchdowns, but ran for only 29 yards for the Texans (5-1). The loss leaves the Atlanta Falcons (6-0) as the only unbeaten team in the NFL.

Rodgers came into the game with a 68.8 completion percentage, 10 touchdown passes and a 96.9 rating ? not bad, but not quite his astonishing standard from last season. Green Bay's offense came in ranked only 21st this year. Rodgers was openly disappointed in his own play, and the offensive line had also been an issue, allowing 21 sacks.

It somehow all came together against the league's third-ranked defense.

"This is just a team that has a lot of pride in our locker room," Rodgers said. "I said it this week, there's not any quit in that locker room. It's almost better when people are doubting us a little bit, I think. We kind of band together. People tried to pull us apart this week and we stuck together and found our motivation."

Houston, meanwhile, badly missed star linebacker Brian Cushing, who was placed on injured reserve after tearing a knee ligament in last week's 23-17 win over the New York Jets.

But there was more to the Texans' collapse than just that.

Rookie DeVier Posey lined up offside on a Green Bay punt, resulting in a Packers' first down. Rodgers then lofted a perfect pass to Nelson over the shoulder of cornerback Johnathan Joseph for a 41-yard touchdown, stunning the noisy crowd.

Houston's offensive line also looked shaky. The Packers sacked Matt Schaub on each of Houston's first two series, forcing quick punts. Schaub was only sacked three times in the first five games.

Houston defensive end J.J. Watt sacked Rodgers, and fired up the fans by mimicking Rodgers' "championship belt" pose after the play. Watt, who finished with two sacks, came into the game with 7 1-2 sacks, just behind Green Bay's Clay Matthews, who led the league with eight and didn't have won against the Texans.

That didn't faze Rodgers, who eluded a rush from Connor Barwin and completed a 24-yard pass to Randall Cobb, who had seven catches for 102 yards. Jones made a diving, fingertip catch in the end zone just before the end of the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.

"As a quarterback, it's interesting to see the kind of dances that go on around you," Rodgers said, "and it's not often that you get a chance to dance back to them."

Foster finished a 5-minute drive with a short touchdown run, but the Packers had a quick answer. Rodgers found Nelson with a 21-yard touchdown to cap a smooth drive that took less than 4 minutes.

Rodgers completed 15 of 21 passes for 187 yards and was only sacked once in the first half. He connected with six receivers before halftime, and didn't miss Greg Jennings, who sat out again with a groin injury.

"He put on a show tonight," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said of Rodgers.

Not that they needed it, but the Texans helped Rodgers with untimely penalties.

A holding call wiped out an 11-yard touchdown run by Rodgers. But Barwin stepped on another player's back trying to block Mason Crosby's field-goal attempt, an unsportsmanlike conduct call resulting in a first down.

Safety Danieal Manning was called for a personal foul after a whistle on a third-down play, and Rodgers threw another TD pass for a 28-10 lead.

"That's discipline," Kubiak said, "and discipline starts with me."

Rookie receiver Keshawn Martin made two first-down catches late in the third quarter and Foster scored again. Cobb returned the ensuing kickoff to the Packers' 43, and Rodgers went back to work. On third down, he scrambled to his right and threw to Crabtree, who was wide open and waltzed into the end zone.

Sam Shields intercepted Schaub and fans started filing for the exits, with more than 14 minutes remaining.

NOTES: Packers LB D.J. Smith and RB Brandon Saine left the game with "significant" knee injuries, according to the team. ... Rodgers surpassed his previous career high (5), set in the second-to-last game of last season, against Chicago. ... The Packers improved to 19-5 in Sunday night games. ... Texans WR Andre Johnson caught eight passes for 75 yards, going over 10,000 yards receiving in his career. ... The Texans made a field goal for the 16th consecutive game, a franchise record. ... The announced attendance was 71,702, a record for a regular-season game at Reliant Stadium.

In this particular specific period, the buyer features a right, although not an obligation, to acquire the resource and the owner receives a responsibility to sell your asset to the buyer. For depth, the right to buy an asset is termed call as well as the right to sell an asset is termed put. Placing foster baby with pregnant foster mom? - Adoption.com Forums

How many foster sibling groups are in the home, and how long has she had them in her care? Does she plan or is she open to adopting ANY of the other foster children? Are any of the other foster children CLOSE to RU? CLOSE to TPR? Obviously her license is not expired. How does that factor in? Is she considering letting it lapse or something?

It's difficult to predict, since there's not not a lot of information here. How far apart are the due dates betw. friend and birth mom?

If your friend is due in May 2013 and bio mom is due next month, that is a very different scenario to them both being due early Feb. 2013.

I'd wait as long as is permitted to tell the agency of pregnancy, unless doc. Rx's bedrest, then she'd have to tell...

Workday IPO Shows Entrepreneurs What Matters: Market Size, Profitability And, Yes, Pricing

workday-logoThe successful public market debut of Workday this past week was breathtaking. The initial filing range of $21 - $24 was raised to $24 -$26 while the company was marketing on its roadshow. The IPO was ultimately priced at $28, and amazingly closed on its first day at $48.69, up 74% from the IPO price and up 116% from the mid-point of the initial filing range. As I?ve discussed earlier, hot IPOs don?t always perform well in the months and quarters after pricing, but public investors believe enough in Workday to have priced it at over a $7Bn valuation. Although most entrepreneurs don?t have the benefit of having started one of the most successful enterprise software companies earlier in life like Workday?s co-founders, David Duffield and Aneel Bhusri, did at PeopleSoft, there are several relevant lessons from Workday?s IPO for all aspiring entrepreneurs. Here are three.

Italy labors to 3-1 win in Armenia in qualifier

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:50 p.m. ET Oct. 12, 2012

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) -Italy veteran Andrea Pirlo scored one goal and created another as the Azzurri labored to a 3-1 win over Armenia in World Cup qualifying Friday.

Pirlo fired Italy ahead in the 11th minute from the penalty spot following Hrayr Mkoyan's handball. But Armenia leveled in the 28th through Shakhtar Donetsk's impressive Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Daniele De Rossi headed Italy back in front shortly after the hour mark before Pablo Osvaldo sealed the result with his third goal in as many qualifying matches.

"We suffered a bit with a few of their counterattacks and we had a couple of individual problems, but I'm happy," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "I won't stop saying it, this is a particularly tricky group, we had a great game and played with a lot of character."

It is Italy's 33rd match without defeat in World Cup and European Championship qualifying matches.

Italy was without Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, who - although initially included in the starting lineup Thursday - had not recovered from flu in time. He was replaced by Juventus forward Sebastian Giovinco.

Italy started brightly and could have been ahead in the fifth minute but Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky did brilliantly at full stretch to keep out Pirlo's free kick, which seemed destined for the top right corner.

Riccardo Montolivo did well minutes later to carve out some space and cross in towards Claudio Marchisio but the ball was marginally too far away for the Juventus midfielder.

Italy was ahead shortly afterwards when it was awarded a penalty.

Domenico Criscito - back in the squad for the first time since being questioned over a match-fixing scandal - raced down the left flank before putting in a cross that Montolivo sidefooted straight at the goalkeeper. The rebound fell back to Montolivo, whose effort was blocked by Hrayr Mkoyan's arm.

Pirlo stepped up and sent Berezovsky the wrong way, firing low into the bottom left corner.

Armenia leveled almost immediately but Gianluigi Buffon did well to tip Aras Ozbiliz's free kick over the bar.

It was back on level terms when Mkhitaryan collected the ball near the halfway line, evaded Andrea Barzagli and raced away from Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci before firing into the bottom right corner.

The in-form Mkhitaryan is currently the leading scorer in the Ukrainian league, with 14 goals in 11 matches.

The Italy players were furious because they wanted the game to have been stopped just before Mkhitaryan got the ball because of a clash of heads between Armenia midfielder Davit Manoyan and Italy defender Christian Maggio.

"When two players clash heads, you have to stop the game. The referee didn't do that and that's why I protested," Prandelli said.

Armenia could have taken the lead seconds after halftime but Artur Edigaryan's fierce effort flew over the bar after a lucky deflection from Criscito.

It went even closer moments later when Giovinco turned in the area to carve out some space for himself but fired over.

Italy could have had a penalty when Karlen Mkrtchyan appeared to handle in the area but the referee waved play on.

Armenia almost took the lead when Mkhitaryan raced down the right flank and crossed towards an unmarked Yura Movsisyan whose volley was brilliantly saved by Buffon.

Italy restored its advantage shortly afterwards when De Rossi headed in Pirlo's cross off the underside of the crossbar.

Armenia battled hard for the equalizer and Movsisyan would have had an almost certain goal after a mistake by Bonucci but for a sliding, last-ditch tackle by Maggio.

Italy sealed the result when Osvaldo headed in De Rossi's free kick.

Wells Fargo earnings rise in 3Q as loan book grows

FILE - In this May 6, 2012, file photo, a Wells Fargo sign is displayed at a branch in New York. Wells Fargo is reporting higher earnings and revenue for the third quarter, thanks to higher fees a rise in trading revenue. (AP Photo/CX Matiash, File)

Wells Fargo posted record earnings in the third quarter as higher fees and trading profits boosted the bank's revenue.

Wells, the nation's biggest mortgage lender, expanded its loan portfolio by increasing loans to consumers. More homeowners refinanced at record-low mortgage rates.

Wells' net income in the quarter ended Sept. 30 rose 23 percent, to $4.72 billion from $3.84 billion in the same period last year.

That amounts to 88 cents per share, a penny higher than the average estimate of analysts surveyed by FactSet. Wells earned 72 cents per share in last year's third quarter.

Overall revenue rose 8 percent to $21.21 billion, slightly lower than analysts expected. Net interest income, which includes interest on loans, edged up 1 percent to $10.66 billion from $10.54 billion.

Loans to consumers rose 4 percent from the prior quarter, to $335.28 billion from $322.30 billion in the period ended June 30. Corporate loans shrank modestly.

More people parked their money at Wells, boosting core deposits by 7 percent from a year earlier, $895.4 billion from $836.8 billion a year earlier.

With more deposits on hand, banks have a stronger capital position and can lend more easily.

Wells, based in San Francisco, appears more confident that those loans will be repaid. It released $200 million that it had set aside earlier to cover possible loan losses.

The earnings don't include dividend payments to preferred shareholders.

The stock fell $3.16 to $34.07 in pre-market trading Friday.

The Brazilian Bum Workout by Aimie Smith | Fitness News | Fitness ...

Published on October 10, 2012 by FASTERSally ????? No Comments

Like everyone else who knows that ?working the biggest muscle group (i.e. the glutes) will have great effects on metabolism and physique?, I have always tried to work my glutes a lot. However, in?my 10 years experience in the gym, I have also noticed that the glutes are a huge contributor to all sorts of issues when not lengthened effectively?

When kettlebells came back into ?gym fashion? it was so exciting to have an exercise to really get the glutes firing. But have you noticed that so many people who work their glutes by doing their kettlebell swings normally have very tight glutes and it takes ages to see results? And the same is also true of anyone who uses ?the clam? exercise from Pilates and the Abductor machine!

Well my friends, I have a much friendlier way to get a tight tush which won?t leave you with the back ache, hip ache and other problems associated with tight glutes.

My approach is simple really ? stretch the muscle to work it! (instead of tightening the muscle to then have to sit in a stretch for 15 mins to undo all that tightening). This approach not only saves you valuable time, effort, energy and butt ache, but will also get you the tight toned derrier of a sloggi thong model! I promise this approach will get you sweating, and you?ll start noticing a difference in the shape of your derriere in just 3 weeks!

?

The Brazilian Bum Workout

In the last 18 months I having been using the Faster ?load to explode? method (i.e. lengthen a muscle to cause it to contract maximally) when training my clients, and all of them have noticed a huge change in their posterior (I have even had a few ladies who have told me their husbands are thrilled with their bottoms, which look better than when they were in their 20s!). Not only that, but the ciatica and hip and lower back issues are now a thing of the past!

So here is Angela (a client of mine), telling us her glute story, as well as an example of some of my favourite exercises for getting that Brazilian Bum?

?

?

The program demonstrated in the video above is one that I used with Angela specifically but you can try it too!

Week 1: Do each exercise in a circuit (i.e. do one exercise after the other) for 30 seconds per exercise. Perform the circuit two times. Do this 2-3 times a week.

Week 2: Do each exercise in a circuit (i.e. do one exercise after the other) for 45 seconds per exercise. Perform the circuit three times. Do this 3-4 times a week.

Weeks 3-4:?Do each exercise in a circuit (i.e. do one exercise after the other) for?60 seconds?per exercise. Perform the circuit?three?times. Do this 3-4 times a week.

?

Once you have done this work out 3-4 times per week over the 4 weeks you should see a great improvement in your rear view ;)
