President Obama and his staff are quite savvy when it comes to technology ? and social sites, in particular???so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that they turned to the social sharing site Reddit today. But it did. With little advance notice, Obama held an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) live chat, taking questions directly from the Reddit community.

Obama said the most difficult decision he made during his presidency was to boost U.S. military forces for a "surge" in Afghanistan. He said it might take a constitutional amendment to reform the country's campaign financing system. He laid out his plan for helping small businesses and debt-laden graduates, gave a shout-out to Internet freedom and basketball great Michael Jordan, and voiced support for the idea of sending astronauts to Mars someday. But perhaps the biggest news from the AMA was that Obama was actually doing an AMA.

"I am Barack Obama, President of the United States ? AMA," he posted on Reddit, adopting the site's terminology. Several Reddit moderators and Admins quickly chimed in to confirm that they verified Obama's identity and that the post wasn't some sort of prank. Reddit's general manager, Erik Martin, told us that the site's staff was in contact with Obama's staff. Obama additionally posted a link to a tweet from his official Twitter account, pointing to that Reddit thread, along with a photo showing the president sitting at a laptop.

A Reddit AMA is basically a question-and-answer free-for-all ? a staple of the Internet forum. Astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson, an AMA alum, famously described Reddit as a "raging community of people with boundless curiosity." From its humble beginnings, in which ordinary joes took questions about their extraordinary experiences, the Reddit AMA has grown into a global stage for scholars, authors and celebrities.

Obama's first-ever presidential AMA added even more wattage to Reddit's spotlight.

"Hey everybody ??this is Barack," the president wrote at the start of his AMA. "Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover."

Obama was due to answer questions on Reddit for about half an hour. More than 11,000 comments piled up by the time Obama bowed out of the conversation, almost an hour after it began. Traffic levels were so high that some folks who wanted to get in on the AMA were stymied by the server overload.?During the AMA, the two top trends on Twitter were "RNC" (for the Republican National Convention) ... and "Reddit."

We checked in with Reddit's Martin while the AMA was in progress. When we asked how things were going, he blurted out that "it's a bit crazy over here!" Frantic typing could be heard in the background.

After the AMA, Reddit's status account on Twitter reported that the site was "cleaning up after the president's visit. ... We'll be back ASAP."

Here's a rundown of the topics Obama covered. Some of the questions have been condensed or paraphrased:

Are you considering increasing funds to the space program? "Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the Curiosity probe on Mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting-edge research that can take us to the next level ??so even as we continue work with the International Space Station, we are focused on a potential mission to an asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Is Internet freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform??"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the Internet remains the open forum for everybody ??from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although their will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle ??and it will be reflected in the platform."

Favorite basketball player? "[Michael] Jordan ??I'm a Bulls guy."

How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? And what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014? "We've really focused on this since I came into office ? 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA [Small Business Administration]. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage."

What is the first thing you'll do on Nov. 7, win or lose??"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard ? especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term? "The decision to surge our forces in Afghanistan. Anytime you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the Taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to Afghan lead ??so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term??"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds-barred flow of seven- and eight-figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and [has] been sponsored in Congress ? to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

What's the recipe for the White House's beer? "It will be out soon! I can tell from firsthand experience, it is tasty."

I am a recent law school graduate [and now] find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future.?... Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. ... What hope can you offer us for your second term??"I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right ? your long-term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're 26. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle-class jobs ? and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth ? more tax cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on Wall Street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didn't work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000 a year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long-term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged ??we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more."

How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the president of the United States??"It's hard ? truthfully, the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with Michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store ? so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 p.m. ??even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at Reddit for participating ? this is an example of how technology and the Internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. Ohio Democratic officials fired for attempt to extend early voting

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Two Democratic officials in Ohio, a key battleground state and huge electoral prize in the November 6 presidential election, were fired for trying to extend early voting to weekends in defiance of a state ban, officials said on Tuesday.

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican, issued a directive earlier this month that the hours for early in-person voting should be consistent throughout the state, where voting rules are a hot-button issue.

Voters will be able to cast absentee ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for the first three weeks of early voting beginning October 2 and until 7 p.m. on weekdays for the final two weeks before the election.

But two Democrats on the Montgomery County elections board, an area which includes Democratic-leaning Dayton, voted to allow weekend voting after Husted's directive was issued. Their votes were balanced by two Republican board members who opposed the change and the idea did not progress toward implementation.

After reviewing a report from an August 20 hearing on the case, Husted decided to fire the Democrats.

"You knowingly and willingly violated Ohio election law," said Husted in an e-mail Tuesday to election officials Dennis Lieberman and Thomas Ritchie. The message was provided to Reuters by the Secretary of State's office.

Democrats had argued that Husted's directive making absentee balloting consistent did not specifically prohibit additional weekend hours. They plan to appeal the decision.

Democrats said Husted has been trying to restrict voting in Democratic-leaning counties. Prior to his directive, some Democratic-leaning counties were not permitted extra hours while some Republican-leaning counties were. Extended voting is thought to favor Democrats in Ohio.

Husted said he was committed to making voting "uniform, easy, fair and secure."

Also in Ohio, lawyers for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign have asked a federal judge to restore early voting rights for the final days before the election to all registered voters in the state. A ruling is pending.

With the stakes so high in Obama's re-election bid against Republican Mitt Romney, there have been a number of disputes this year over voting, especially over new laws in several states requiring voters to present a valid photo ID.

Democrats say large number of minorities and elderly voters do not have the necessary ID. Republicans say the photo ID rule is needed to prevent voting fraud.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Rivier University has a position available for a full time Educational Resource Center/Reference Librarian. The Cho Educational Resource Center (ERC) is a curriculum support library designed to serve the research needs of the University?s education students. The ERC is located in the Benoit Education Center, a facility separate from the main (Regina) Library. The ERC is fully part of the University?s Library system and the Library?s User Services Department.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee all services and daily functions of the ERC such as circulation, reserves, shelving and the like. Assist in developing and administering an operating budget for the ERC. Plan hours of operation for the ERC. Provide reference service to students, faculty, staff, and other ERC and library patrons using the full range of technology aids such as e-mail, chat, texting as well as traditional modes of interaction. Provide classroom library instruction, create and edit LibGuides and participate in the library?s Information Literacy Program. Collect and compile library statistics pertaining to the ERC. Prepare related administrative/ operations reports. In a team setting, edit and revise the ERC and Library web page. Serve as library liaison and collection development specialist for Education faculty and other subject areas as assigned. Assist with selecting database and reference resources. Learn and implement new resources and technologies as they relate to reference and instruction services. Assist with promoting library services, resources and events. Assist in the coordination and development of materials for library events. Keep abreast of current developments and trends in the field, particularly in technology. Attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS degree. An MLS degree candidate (near completion) may be considered if applicant has sufficient relevant experience. The ability and willingness to support the mission of the University, in all daily activities. Experience working in a library, academic library experience preferred. Skills related to reference and circulation services, including database searching, and experience conducting reference interviews. Some web page editing and design experience, as well as library instruction experience. Strong planning, supervisory and writing skills. Ability to show initiative, prioritize, and complete projects in a timely manner. Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred: Advanced web editing skills. Experience with creating and editing LibGuides and online tutorials. Experience working with curriculum-based materials and/or an Education background. Experience providing library instruction in accord with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Some experience with collection development, writing reports, and developing/administering a budget.

Final Fridays Second Anniversary!

Two years down the road, Final Fridays has become Lawrence?s preeminent art event each month, bringing thousands of visitors to the downtown area in search of outstanding visual art, musical entertainment, literary arts and performance. Final Fridays began as the collaborative effort of artists, galleries, curators, downtown businesses, The Lawrence Arts Center, Downtown Lawrence Incorporated and many many more tireless volunteers who wished only to bring the wealth of the Lawrence arts community to the public. This massive effort is rewarded today with a renewed boom in the arts in Lawrence, visible everywhere you look.

On this Final Friday, you will find work, music and performances by hundreds of artists all over the downtown area as well as the new Warehouse Arts District. Maps can be found the evening of Final Friday at The Lawrence Arts Center, the Warehouse Arts District and many local galleries and venues. These incredible photographs do not depict the ancient palaces, mosques, and ruins of guidebooks; this is the everyday Turkey of a rising middle class, heavily influenced by Western Europe and the United States. This is also the Turkey of displaced migrants, shantytowns, and gentrification.

Artist?s Statement: This work celebrates the disruption, however small, of the expected. There is a certain symmetry, a prevailing banality and stillness, only occasionally interrupted by some half noticeable absurdity. One could argue that this is a parallel to our routine lives, primarily spent in some automatic mode of everyday activity, begging for the details that separate one day or hour from the next so as to make it stand out, make it special. You could even argue that desire for ?specialness? leads individuals that are otherwise functioning as part of the societal hive to act out, to call attention?to get that crazy haircut or shiny car that disrupts a sea of gray sedans.

There is the tension of what appears ?normal? but is in fact slightly adjacent to normal. The colors, the method and application of paint, the shiny resin surface: all are employed to take away from any indication of ?reality.? Certain details are off, skewed, indicative of an interference, disorder, or imperfect pattern. This world is the world you and I know, but it also is not. It is a made up world, comprised of bits and pieces of the familiar and the familiar desire to be something else, something more than that, something different. Special.

A central piece will often inspire a mental picture that, in turn, must find its way to reality through trial and error assimilations. Each finished piece of art or jewelry gives validity to one woman?s slightly bizarre obsession with all things metal.

Sculpture artist Jacob Burmood will present a selection of works in a new exhibition, Moving at the Speed of Time, opening at the Teller?s art space on August 28.

Moving at the Speed of Time is the first Lawrence showing for Burmood, who moved to the area for graduate school after spending four years as a professional artist in Missouri, where he completed his undergraduate studies in sculpture. The exhibition features several of Burmood?s sculptures ? both as hanging ?wall pieces? and as free-standing structures ? in addition to some of his ceramic vases.

Though Burmood created all the works presented in Moving at the Speed of Time during the past two years, he says they?ve been in development as part of a larger body of work for the past eight years. He says his work draws influence from the smooth motion typical of rivers, tides and dance.

?There?s definitely a theme that runs through the entire body of everything I?ve ever done, and that?s an appeal to the sense of movement and kinetics without actually moving,? Burmood says. ?It?s pretty much geared towards fluid movements, trying to approach some kind of grace.?

His work is included in over 30 public collections in the U.S. and abroad. Tom Reed is a Senior Lecturer at Washington University (St. Louis) where he is also the master printer at the University?s Island Press.

Final Friday at Phoenix Gallery this month will feature three incredible artists: Gary and Sherrie Dick of Duet Designs and Cindy Buehler of Cinderelish. We are teaming up with M. Street?Interiors,?formally Biao Design, and Cupcake Construction Company for our food for Final Friday. What a treat it will be to sample the?delicious cupcakes that the Cupcake Construction Company serves daily here on Mass Street! We will also have wine, hors d? oeuvres?and lemonade. Michael Paull will be providing music. And don?t forget to go to Lost Art Space in the Phoenix Underground. The artists will be presenting a salon style exhibition. This is not to be missed.

Duet Designs jewelry reflects over 25 years of combined design experience by husband and wife team, Gary and Sherrie. Gary creates fused dichroic glass pendants, pins and earrings. Dichroic glass (originally produced for the aerospace industry) has a beautiful and unique reflective quality with exciting shifts of color, depending on the light and the angle at which the piece is viewed. Gary assembles an artistic selection of multiple layers of dichroic, iridescent and clear glass, then fuses them together at a temperature of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sherrie selects semi-precious gem stones from around the world and whimsically wire-wraps them into pendants and earrings. She is also an accomplished artist in the mediums of polymer clay and fine silver, and often incorporates Gary?s dichroic glass cabochons into her pieces. Each hand-crafted Duet Designs item is an original, one-of-a-kind piece of fine quality jewelry.

Cindy Buehler of Cinderelish began working with clay 12 years ago. She has taken classes and workshops at Red Star Studios, The KC Clay Guild, William Jewell College and Bracker?s in Lawrence. Cindy uses bright glaze colors to enhance her bold black and white sgrafitto designs. Her work is created from porcelain clay on the pottery wheel or with her original slab molds. Although some designs are similar, each piece is one of a kind. Cindy currently teaches classes and works from her home studio in Liberty, MO.

Michael Paull is a very talented composer/multi-instrumentalist who teaches music lessons at the Americana Music Academy here in Lawrence. Originally from Colorado, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas a number of years ago to pursue some musical opportunities. Michael?s music has been heard on television and radio. His music has been performed in a variety of settings, including a premiere by the Topeka Symphony Orchestra. He continues to teach, compose, and perform music throughout the area, both solo and ensemble. Kansas has become his permanent home.

The Watkins celebrates the dramatic move of its Milburn Electric Car with a family-friendly party on Friday, August 31 from 6-8 PM.

When the Milburn car was moved from its second floor home of 37 years, it couldn?t just be rolled up the Watkins grand staircase. It received a custom-made rig to take it back out the front door, around the corner of 11^th and Massachusetts and up into the air via crane before sliding carefully through a third floor window to its new spot.

To celebrate the Milburn?s move, the Watkins will stage Lawrence?s Longest Toy Car Racetrack on August 31, as part of the monthly Final Friday. Visitors are invited to bring their own Matchbox-style cars to race down the track set up on Watkins grand staircase. Photos of the Milburn?s journey will be on display, and museum staff and volunteers will be present to talk about the car?s history: its origins, its home at the museum and its most recent adventure.

It?s shaping up to be a good time. J Roger Spohn?s photography exhibit is still up in the staircase, and the impressive Ernst Ulmer painting ?Blood-Stained Dawn? is on display in the new Quantrill?s Raid exhibit.

Lawrence painter Aaron Marable has kept relatively quiet in recent years. After the birth of his first child a year and a half ago, his creative output slowed with the demands of parenthood. But he?s back at it with a new exhibition, Domestic Bliss, opening at The Invisible Hand Gallery on August 31.

The near-dozen paintings that make up the exhibition find Marable trying out some new things. He says he?s focusing more on color relationships than in his previous work, aiming for a subtle, refined palette. But Domestic Bliss also has him challenging his motives as a figurative painter.

?It?s less figurative and more about form and more poetic moments,? Marable says. ?I?m trying to step away a little bit from the fussiness of what being a figurative painter can mean.?

With his move from strict figurative work, Marable strives to address several points in one piece. Though one would expect an exhibition titled Domestic Bliss to function as a portrait of familial happiness, Marables paintings contain subtle elements of darkness that reveal the complicated nature of parenthood.

?There?s always something slightly unsettling in the work, which is part in parcel with domesticity,? Marable says. ?There?s the elation and joy of the day to day and watching this person develop. That bond is created in the most intense way, in a way that you?ve never known before. But then there?s also the other side of it. There?s frustration and there?s self-doubt. There are all these things that are still a part of it that doesn?t always get addressed by parents.?
